While beautiful and stunning Venice faces a rise in canal levels, due to climate change and sea change. In 2020 they faced historic flooding due to Acqua alta, which is when a full moon, low atmospheric pressure, specific wind direction and above normal high tide occurs. This used to be known as a once-in-a-decade or once-in-a-lifetime situation but with current climate changes, it is happening much more often.

The city is built on logs, large wooden pillions driven down into the ground with absolutely miraculous buildings built upon them, some over a century ago. Along with the rising waters, Venice is also sinking around 1 cm a year.

Even with the flooding, Venice is a must-see stop on any trip to Italy. I highly recommend heading to Venice outside of December/January when flooding is more likely. The people are amazing, the architecture of the canals and buildings is beautiful and the food is to die for. ♥️
